Carers' Council Committee
CARERS COUNCIL - ALLIES IN ADULT MENTAL HEALTH COMMITTEE The Carers' Council Committee has 6 members, they are:- Peter Robinson - Chairperson, Godfrey Cozens - Secretary, Jean Rust - Treasurer, John Hawkes, Elsie James & Judith Machin CONFIDENTIALITY Nottinghamshire Healthcare Mental Health Trust have just issued a document entitled “Best Practice Guidance to support the User and Carer Information Policy” which is intended for healthcare professionals as further guidance on the issue of confidentiality. The Carers Council committee feel this is a welcome step along the road towards a better understanding of the issues around confidentiality in the care of those with enduring mental illness, but it does not go far enough. The document does not cover the wide range of issues around confidentiality which were raised very successfully at the Confidentiality Conference organised by the Carers Council in April 2004. The committee responded to Paul Smeeton, who is driving the development, with a suggestion for the content for a protocol which we believe will deal with these issues. A meeting is arranged for 23rd November 2005 to discuss this. If anybody has any views on this difficult area, please let us know.............. CARE PROGRAMME APPROACH (CPA) At its meeting on 28th October '05 the committee discussed what it should do to push the agenda on CPA. We know that the CPA process does not work very well from what carers tell us and from the committee’s own experience. Audits of the CPA process over the last 3 years also show this. There are a number of activities across Nottinghamshire which are designed to raise the skills of professionals, and identify unhelpful attitudes which get in the way of good practice at all levels right up to consultant level. We are involved in some of these. Godfrey Cozens our Secretary sits on a CPA policy group chaired by Sue Thornton of Nottinghamshire Healthcare Mental Health Trust but we feel we need to do more. This will be discussed again at our meeting on 25th November '05. If anybody has any views on any aspect of CPA, please let us know ..................s.westley@carersfederation.co.uk CARERS COUNCIL - CARERS SURVEY At its meeting on 28th October the committee discussed the initial results of the carers survey which all Carers Council members were invited to take part in. We had 36 responses out of our 193 total membership. We think this is a good response based on our experience of these kinds of surveys so thanks for those who did take part. We are doing a more detailed analysis of your views about our services, but the main concerns you expressed about changes since we moved to Beech Avenue were:
These concerns will be discussed with the Carers federation as part of our overall review of the success of our arrangement with them which will be we complete by the end of December. This is the first time we have reported the discussions of the committee on the web site. Tell us what you think.................? s.westley@carersfederation.co.uk If anybody wants to come along to our next committee meeting on Friday 31 August 2007 which will be held at the Carers Centre, 1 Beech Avenue, Sherwood Rise at 10 am, please join us. You can sit and listen, or take part without any obligation to feel you have to join the committee. |
